What Causes Fine Lines & Wrinkles?

Our skin is our largest organ with a surface area of approximately 20 Square Feet. It is made up of 3 distinct layers:

  1. The Epidermis – is the waterproof outer layer that provides protection.
  2. The Dermis – is a dense layer of connective tissues consisting of collagen, elastic fibres, and reticular fibres. Collagen is near 70% of the skins weight and gives the dermis its flexibility and structural integrity. Elastin is only 1% of the skin’s weight but it is essential for maintaining the skins elasticity. The dermis contains hyaluronic acid and glycoproteins along with other important substances that keeps our skin hydrated.
  3. The hypodermis – is the deepest layer of the skin that is made of connective tissue, elastin and fat.

Over time, our skin beings to lose flexibility and strength as our elastin and collagen beings to breakdown after repeated muscle contractions. Lines and wrinkles begin to appear along the lines of these muscle with repeated movement. The development of lines and wrinkles isn’t helped by reduced hydration in the skin as we age, which occurs due to a decrease in hyaluronic acid production. Other factors that cause fine lines and wrinkles include UV damaged from prolonged sun exposure; genetic factors; as well as external causes such as smoking or alcohol.

Skin specialists classify wrinkles as lines with a depth of more than 2mm, caused by the repetition of facial muscle contractions. Fine lines are described as being less than 2mm in depth, caused by sagging skin.

To keep your skin healthy as well as preventing and treating fine lines and wrinkles, our experts recommend:

  • Avoiding direct sun exposure by wearing suncream
  • Getting enough sleep – insufficient sleep leads to excessive cortisol production which causes skin cells to breakdown
  • Regularly apply moisturiser and keep your skin clean
  • Maintain a balanced diet with essential ingredients for skin health (fruit, vegetables, eggs, salmon, cocoa, olive oil and soy)
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Apply vitamin C skin products to stimulate collagen production
  • Use Retinoid products to repair sun damage and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Botox injections prevent and treat wrinkles by relax the facial muscles and smooth the skin
  • Hyaluronic acid Dermal Filler Injection enhance hydration, facial contours while softening wrinkles and smoothing fine lines.
  • Additional care like chemical peels, Microneedling and laser treatments enhance skin health while reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
