What is the difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers?

Botox and Dermal Fillers are both non-surgical aesthetic treatments completed via minimally invasive injections. Botox temporarily stops movement in selected muscles to reduce the appearance of lines but also acts as a preventative treatment to stop the development of wrinkles in the future. While Dermal Fillers add volume while hydrating the deep layers of the skin to selected areas to restore volume and smooth creases.

BOTOX

Botox, or Anti-wrinkle injections, contain a toxin that blocks the release of acetylcholine, a chemical signal from your nerves that tells the muscle to contract. This temporary effect prevents the movement of local muscles to the injection site, it can take up to 2 weeks following the treatment for it to take full effect and lasts between 3-6 months.

There are many uses for Botox injections, the most popular of which is to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. However, it can also be used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the hands and underarms. As well as uses for chronic pain including migraines. Our consultant Dr. Husham Al-Shather has completed higher specialist training in Pain Management and Anaesthetics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London and Advance Pain Training at St. George’s Hospital.

Botox injections have had extensive medical study and have been deemed a minimally invasive treatment and safe and effective treatment.

DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal filler injections are a type of nonsurgical cosmetic procedure that restores volume to areas that have reduced collagen. Fillers are gel-like substances that are designed to be injected into different parts of the skin to add fullness and restore volume. Fillers also enhance facial contours softening wrinkles and smooth lines. It is a quick and cost-effective way to rejuvenate your skin without surgery.

At MILAN Skin Clinic we use Hyaluronic Acid (HA) based Dermal Fillers. These are the most common type of filler type because Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the skin which keeps your skin hydrated and voluminous. As we age our bodies stop producing HA, dermal fillers are an ideal way to support your skin to retain moisture while restoring lost volume.

Dermal Fillers are considered a very low-risk treatment and HA fillers typically last between 6-12 months.
